Things users want to show off

fast to buildneeds users firstborrow

Give users a result that makes them look good, and they’ll post it. Your product comes along.

500M+
shares of Spotify Wrapped 2025 in its first wave. That’s free advertising users made themselves.

What works

Make it about the user. “You’re in the top 8%” beats “Powered by [product].” Pick 3 to 5 metrics, collect about 6 months of data, and send the recap by push or email. Trophy guidevendor

Where it breaks

It amplifies traction you have. Without recurring users, there's nothing to recap. A wrong number in someone’s recap is embarrassing, and rankings can discourage light users.

How to start

  1. Check your support inbox and social mentions for what people already screenshot.
  2. Make the result about the user. Brand it lightly: people share wins, and nobody shares a logo.
  3. Add a share button that pre-fills the post, since every extra tap costs shares.
  4. If people use the product regularly, send monthly or yearly recaps.

The cast

Spotify Wrapped: the best-known recap.
  • 2025: 200M engaged users within 24 hours, shared 500M+ times
  • It comes once a year, so the shares arrive in one wave
Wordle: one developer, no marketing, no app.
  • Josh Wardle added the share grid after players started pasting emoji grids by hand. It went from 90 to 300,000 players in two months, and the New York Times bought it for “low seven figures”
GitHub’s contribution graph: green squares that show you kept at it.
  • GitHub ships its yearly recap in November, ahead of December’s flood
Duolingo & Strava: streaks and Year in Sport.
  • 5M+ Duolingo users hold year-plus streaks and post them unprompted. Strava’s Year in Sport fills Instagram every December
Andrew Chen: a16z partner, ex-Uber growth.
  • The Cold Start Problem argues that networks and share loops beat paid acquisition
